Printmaking Professor Lari Gibbons Featured in Prestigious Red Press Collaborative

Acclaimed printmaker, educator and innovator Lari Gibbons, professor of Studio Art, is bringing national attention to the University of North Texas College of Visual Arts and Design through her recent residency at Youngstown State University in Youngstown, Ohio.

Gibbons was featured as the 2026 visiting artist for YSU’s Red Press Collaborative, a prestigious annual program that invites leading printmakers to campus for an intensive week of creative production. Held March 9–13, the residency brought Gibbons together with students in daily studio sessions, culminating in the creation of a limited-edition collaborative print.

The Red Press Collaborative has become a hallmark experience for emerging artists, offering students the opportunity to work side by side with established professionals. Each year’s edition is signed, numbered and documented, with proceeds supporting student travel, study abroad opportunities and program resources. Gibbon's classroom visits, student and speaking sessions were coordinated by Joseph D'Uva Jr., YSU professor and printmaker.

For Gibbons, the invitation reflects a career defined by both technical mastery and forward-thinking experimentation. At UNT, she teaches printmaking and previously spent a decade directing PRINT Press, a professional fine art collaborative print studio. Her work bridges traditional processes with contemporary technologies, integrating hand-printing techniques with tools such as laser cutters and CNC routers to produce intricate woodblocks, plates and matrices.

That blend of craft and innovation was central to the collaborative experience in Ohio, where students engaged directly with Gibbons’ process — from concept to final print — gaining insight into both the physical and conceptual dimensions of printmaking.

Beyond the studio, Gibbons delivered a public lecture as part of YSU's Department of Art Lecture Series at The John J. McDonough Museum of Art, expanding the reach of her work to a broader audience of students, faculty and community members.

Her impact extends far beyond a single residency. Gibbons’ prints are held in collections across the country and have been featured in major publications on contemporary printmaking. She has completed residencies at leading institutions including the Banff Centre, Penland School of Craft, Sitka Center for Art and Ecology and the Ucross Foundation, and has led workshops at Anderson Ranch Arts Center, Haystack Mountain School of Crafts and the Amon Carter Museum of Art.

Her selection for the Red Press Collaborative places her among a distinguished roster of artists who have shaped the program, reinforcing her role as a leader in the field, such as Michael Weigman, Jeffrey Sippel, Richard Repasky, Susanne Slavick and Robyn O’Neil.

At UNT, experiences like Gibbons’ national residency translate directly into the classroom. Students studying printmaking at CVAD learn from faculty who are actively contributing to the evolution of the medium — gaining hands-on experience with both time-honored techniques and emerging technologies.

As printmaking continues to expand across disciplines, from fine art to design and digital fabrication, CVAD students are positioned at the forefront of that conversation — working alongside faculty whose practices are shaping the future of the field.
