The College of Visual Arts and Design is funded to cover night-time Public Safety Officers, allowing current CVAD students to access the Art Building and Art Annex after the college's regular operating hours. Please check with the Department of Studio Art, cvad.Studio@unt.edu, for access to the Art Annex after regular operating hours.
CVAD students who are currently enrolled may request access made available by swiping their UNT identification card in a card reader at the entrance of the Art Building for "swipe" access after CVAD's regular hours of operation.
To request after-hours "swipe" access, students must:
After opening the online web form, students must complete the following steps.
Once the student has entered the information and completed the quiz, a CVAD Dean's Office staff member will send an email notification to the student's email address in the Qualtrics quiz form.
Monday–Thursday: Swipe in from 10 p.m.–7 a.m.
Friday: Closed from 5 p.m.–7 a.m.
Saturday: Swipe in from 5 p.m.–7 a.m.

The Art Building's schedule for after regular hours is as follows.
Access to the Art Building is 24/7 during the long semester.

the building.
The program coordinators determine access to specific areas in consultation with their
department chairs.
Hours for access to restricted spaces are as follow.
General after-hours access to Sculpture will be only to Room 153 but not to any shops. Access to other areas in Sculpture, such as the woodshop or tool cage, will be determined by the Sculpture faculty in consultation with the Chair of the Department of Studio Art.
Metalsmithing and Jewelry students with after-hours access can swipe for access into the exterior door, but only rooms 170 and 172 will be available for after-hours use.
Classrooms will be open during normal business hours until the 12th class day. After the 12th class day, Feb. 12, rooms will be open during the following hours.
After the 12th class day, Feb. 12, classrooms will be available only by swipe access to undergraduate students who have approved after-hours access on the above schedule.

As a currently enrolled CVAD student, you may request an identification card for "swipe" access to the Art Building to have extended after-hours options to work in the Art Building. For this to occur, you must read and understand the information on this web page. To demonstrate this understanding, you must take a three-question quiz before you sign a statement of understanding regarding the rules for after-hours usage and safety practices described below. You will also be asked to provide your name, student ID number, and the issue number on your current UNT identification card, which is in the bottom right corner on the front of your UNT ID card.
1. With after-hours card-swipe access, an ID card becomes a master key to the Art Building, so you are expected to care for your UNT ID card responsibly and with great care.
2. After-hours swipe access to the Art Building is available only at the entrance nearest the dean’s office, Room 101, at the southwest corner. All other exterior doors will remain locked after regular building hours. Only CVAD students are allowed in the building after hours. This means no friends, partners, or other non-CVAD students may be in the building after hours. All others will be asked to leave the building.
3. You must swipe in separately if you arrive in a group. This allows us to monitor who is in the building after hours should the need arise — and will provide an accurate usage assessment to the Provost’s Office.
4. You are expected to treat the building and its furnishings respectfully.
a. Do not cut on surfaces without a mat or protection beneath your work.
b. No spray adhesives are allowed in the building, regardless of whether you use a
spray booth.
c. If you make a mess, clean up after yourself.
d. When possible, you should use a classroom dedicated to the subject for which you
are working.
5. You may not sleep, or “nest,” in the building after hours.
6. Do not prop any exterior doors open for any reason. Doing so will allow unauthorized entry to the building and may endanger students' safety. If caught doing this, you will lose your after-hours privileges for the semester balance. A second violation in a subsequent semester will result in a permanent loss of privileges.
7. During university closures due to weather and university holidays, the Art Building also will be closed.
8. In an emergency, you are expected to follow the directions of the Public Safety Officers.
9. You are always expected to use safe workplace practices.
1. Familiarize yourself with how to contact the UNT Police Department. https://police.unt.edu | Phone: 940-565-3000
In an emergency, dial 911. The Art Building's physical address is 1201 W. Mulberry St., Denton, TX 76201.
Note: A 911 call or text in Denton is first routed to the Denton Police Police Department, the primary public safety answering point. If the call or text requires a UNT Police Department response, the call or text will be transferred to the UNT Police.
The Denton Police Department has provided the following instructions and guidelines.
IMPORTANT: Remember, voice calls to 911 are always the best and fastest way to get help.
2. Pay attention to UNT Eagle Alerts: Eagle Alert is the primary alert notification system for the University of North Texas. It will be used to communicate emergency messages to the campus community. Other alert notification methods, such as outdoor weather sirens, should be utilized in addition to Eagle Alert.
3. Do not work alone. There is safety in numbers. You should not work alone in a classroom or any space in the building. Working with at least one other person is strongly recommended.
4. Never walk to your car alone after hours. Find at least two others to walk you to your car if possible. Before you enter your car, look in the back seat. Once you are in your car, your escorts may walk back to swipe themselves back into the building. You may call the UNT Police for an escort if you don’t have one.
5. Take extra care when you are tired. When sleep-deprived, be careful with sharp or potentially dangerous objects, such as an X-ACTO knife. If you hurt yourself and need help, call 911.
6. Be safe after dark. If you are not parked near the Art Building and need a ride to your car, visit the UNT Transportation Services web page for Campus Transit and find the E-Ride paragraph on that page, https://transportation.unt.edu/campus-transit, for information.
This agreement will be in effect only until 5 p.m. on the final day of classes each semester, after which after-hours privileges will end. After-hours privileges will not be available again until after the Census Date – the 12th day of the semester — of the new semester.
