"Is it Real?" exhibition features Alicia Eggert's animated sign, "OURs"

Is it Real?? sign in black and white. The "Is it Real?" exhibition is a groundbreaking showcase that delves into the erosion of reproductive rights in America and its far-reaching effects, as expressed through the work of a visionary group of contemporary artists. The exhibition highlights artists connected to the South, with many representing marginalized communities.

Featured artist Alicia Eggert, associate professor of Studio Art, will present her work at Lagoon in Dallas, where she will install an animated neon sign, "OURs" (2022-24), on the building's rooftop. Created in collaboration with artist and designer Sarah Sandman and the Planned Parenthood Federation of America, the piece emphasizes the critical importance of abortion access. The sign alternates between three phrases: “OUR BODIES,” “OUR FUTURES,” and “OUR ABORTIONS,” highlighting their interconnectedness. The endless cycle of these statements underscores how a person's control over their body directly impacts their future and how access to abortion is a vital aspect of that control.
