CVAD Gallery Fall 2022 exhibition

"A Banquet for Seaweed: Snapshots from the Arab 1980s"

Guest curated by Nada Shabout, 2020-2021 UNT Regents Professor of Art History and Art Education and recipient of the 2020 Kuwait Prize for Arts and Literature.

Featuring works from the Barjeel Art Foundation and other private collections, the exhibition engages with poignant issues that permeated the Arab World during the 1980s and tells a story of creativity in the face of turbulent shifts and changes. It highlights artists’ engagement with and negotiation of despair, new realities, and the diaspora. The work in the exhibition challenges preconceived notions about this region and its productivity. It speaks of connectivities in response to its rejection as equal by the international contemporary art scene.

This art exhibition is a complementary event to the symposium titled "The 1980s: Representational Pressures, Departures and Beginnings," Nov. 3–5, in the UNT Art Building.
