"The Atlas of Art Crime" by Laura Evans

Book cover in black and gold shows a man walking out of a museum with artwork. In "The Atlas of Art Crime,Laura Evans, associate professor of Art Education, traces the modern history of art crime across the globe through 75 compelling stories of mystery, scandal and misadventure.

From dramatic, cinematic heists to cheeky, self-destructive forgers and vandalism inspired by social issues, the art crime stories in this book are sure to captivate. Divided into three categories — theft, vandalism, and forgery — and organized geographically, each tale uncovers a range of motivations behind art crimes: greed, validation, revenge, power, and fame, but also, more surprisingly, love, equity, and idealism.

Featuring examples of art from ancient history to the contemporary era, "The Atlas of Art Crime" includes images of world-renowned masterpieces, the criminals who defiled them, the heroes who investigated the crimes, and, in many cases, snapshots from the crimes themselves.

Packed with intrigue, controversy, and power dynamics, this book offers a fascinating look at the darker side of the art world.

The 224-page book, published by Prestel Publishing in London, will be available in English, Chinese, Polish, and German.
