New Media Art seniors host two exhibitions leading up to the CVAD Celebrates 130/30 special event
Denton, UNT CVAD – Artwork created by the students currently enrolled in the Senior New Media Art Studio course, ASTU 4700, in the New Media Art B.F.A. program will be on display Oct. 26–27, 2023, as a lead-up to CVAD Celebrates 130/30 weekend events on Oct. 28, 9:30 a.m.–5 p.m.
Separated into two thematic exhibitions, the "Future Memory 2000" show on Oct. 26 will explore identity in the physical and virtual worlds. The show "Reality ✓" will feature immersive explorations of the relationship between technology and autonomy on Oct. 27.
Artworks range from 3D renders of gardens to create conversation about unsupervised internet access for youth to hyper-saturated studies of internet culture, archival explorations to critique the use of artificial intelligence, and the use of legacy technology to expose the ghosts of futures that never happened. Through diverse mixed media, interactive installations, and video art, both exhibitions critically examine the convergence of surveillance, artificial intelligence, permissions, and privacy in our digitized lives. The artworks challenge viewers to reflect on the ethical dimensions of surrendering personal data for convenience while contemplating the consequences of relinquishing privacy in the name of technological progress.
In collaboration with New Art City, a virtual exhibition will follow these mid-semester in-person events at CVAD in December. The New Media Art program in the College of Visual Arts and Design at the University of North Texas offers both B.F.A. and M.F.A. degrees. As a transdisciplinary program, students re-frame their understanding of different tools, technologies, theories, and methods to develop hybrid systems and solutions beyond any discipline.
