CVAD comm design students take 16 awards, 61 percent of prize money and UNT garners 'best school' in this national competition

The CVAD Communication Design program had a great night April 25, 2020, at the online version of the National Student Show & Conference 16 with CVAD students winning 16 of the awards and 61.1 percent of the $20,000 prize money — and the Best of School Award went to UNT!

Now in its 16th year, the competition had 881 entries in all nine categories from 18 schools in the U.S. Only 129 of those were accepted for the 2020 show with 40 from the UNT College of Visual Arts and Design. Originally scheduled to take place in early April with a conference and awards show, NSSC16 pressed on through COVID-19 with judging and a video show of the results, but no three-day conference, of course. NSSC is a national, professionally judged creativecompetition and conference built for students and their educators. Karen Dorff, principal lecturer in communication design, and the other communication design faculty have attended the NSSC every year since it began, she said. Communication design faculty members are Troy Abel, Deanna Gibson, Erica Holeman, Michael Gibson, Eric Ligon, Douglas May, Keith Owens, David Wolske and Stephen Zhang in the Department of Design headed by Hans-Peter Wachter, chair.

The NSSC is funded and supported by the DSVC Foundation, a non-profit organization that provides aid through scholarships to high school and college students who are interested in taking the next steps toward a visual arts career.

Each year, NSSC selects five industry leaders from across the nation to judge student work. Coming from diverse backgrounds and areas of expertise, the well-rounded judging panels help ensure a high-quality show. Judges are selected to represent a diverse pool of knowledge, expertise and points of view. To maintain impartiality, judges must not have taught at a collegiate level for the past three years. Judges review student work without knowledge of the school association.
